International media have reported that ISIS (Islamic State) has claimed responsibility for the terrorist attack in Moscow today (22/3). Dozens of people lost their lives, while the brutality with which the armed killers acted was shocking.
Five gunmen dressed in camouflage uniforms opened fire with automatic weapons on people at a concert hall in Crocus City, near Moscow, in one of the deadliest attacks in Russia in years.
The worst terrorist attack in Russia in two decades
Reports suggest that the attackers also used explosives, which caused a massive fire in the building. Flames started shooting from the building and clouds of black smoke rose above the floor after the first explosion. Russian media reported a second explosion at the site, and reports said some gunmen were holed up somewhere inside the building. Part of the roof has reportedly collapsed.
Fear of dead children
Moscow's Commissioner for Children's Rights confirmed that minors were among those killed in today's attack. Several children were injured in the shooting at the concert hall, Russia's RIA news agency reported, citing a Moscow official. An eyewitness, who did not want to be named, said several children and youths were playing a dance competition in the ballroom when the attack began. Their parents were also present.
Authorities evacuated 100 people hiding in the basement and some of the attackers were reportedly trapped inside.
