Microsoft: The end of one of Windows 11's most hyped features

Microsoft announced in February 2022 that Windows 11 users in the US would be able to “run” Android apps. After two years, it's time to remove the wrinkle as this feature hasn't reached many countries.

So the tech giant has announced in a surprise move that support for the Android app will end next year. Specifically, developers will not be able to submit new apps after March 5, 2024, and users who have installed Android apps through the Amazon Appstore or through it will only be able to access those apps until March 5, 2025.

Final result is March 5, 2025

With a simple announcement, it announces that it is “discontinuing support for the Windows Subsystem for Android™️ (WSA),” so that “the Amazon Appstore and all WSA-based apps and games on WSA will no longer be supported starting March 5, 2025. Until then, technical support will remain available to customers.”

A move that doesn't happen… “walk”

Amazon in turn says it will “provide a smoother support experience for developers and customers of the Amazon Appstore on Windows 11.”

The feature received mixed reviews from users, many of whom complained of limited apps, poor performance, and compatibility issues.

Android apps on Windows 11 initially looked like Microsoft's answer to Apple and running iOS apps on macOS. Microsoft partnered with Amazon but lacked official access to Google's Play Store. This is why Microsoft chose to “kill” Android apps in Windows 11, according to Thewarge.
