Even as 36 years of life sentence was killed for his wife’s death, Leo Chaufd put the work to forgive the man who confessed to the crime.
He turned to his faith. He directed the younger prisoners. He became a person who matters to others inside. But it was not until recently – nearly a year since he was released after decades of maintaining that he was innocent – that Mr. Chaufield was able to feel a “sense of achievement”, after he and Jeremy Scott spoke on the phone for the first time.
“The forgiveness is not related to the person who hurts us,” said Mr. Chovaeld in an interview with him recently. “It is the one who has been injured and free from the effect of this.”
He added, “And Jeremy had an opportunity to close a chapter.”
Their conversation appeared in the second season of “”Bone Valley“The podcast, which recorded the initial episodes in 2023, the efforts of Mr. Khafield to prove his innocence, and the producers described a case full of mistakes.
The second season, the first two episodes, starting from Wednesday, explore the recognition of Mr. Scott that Michelle Khafield’s killing in 1987 and the reconciliation of his son after years of violation. Mr. Scott also explains another murder he says he committed, but he has never been charged.
